    Fruitful first Forum

    Nordregio present at SUME conference in Vienna

    On May 3rd 2011, researchers from Nordregio participated in the international conference Urban Development 2050 – Planning resource-efficient cities in Vienna. The conference was a central dissemination event in the SUME project (Sustainable Urban Metabolism for Europe) and was organized by the project's lead partner, the Austrian Institute for Regional Studies and Spatial Planning (ÖIR).

    Second phase of the Municipality Programme ended

    The second phase of the programme "Nordic-Russian Exchange Programme for Local Civil Servants" has now ended. During the winter and spring of 2010/2011 Russian and Nordic municipal civil servants made six study visits to seven Nordic municipalities.

    Insight into the opinions of Egyptian university students

    A November 2009 study on how Egyptian university students view Europe, as part of the FP 7 EuroBroadMap Project, indicates that they regard Europe primarily in terms of economic development and advanced technologies. In a Nordic context, the students emphasize a strong aversion to living in Denmark, somewhat positive sentiments about moving to Sweden and a lack of knowledge on the other Nordic countries. The study also suggests that the students see Tunisia and Algeria, states that experienced significant civil unrest just prior to Egypt in early 2011, in a positive light and as having close ties to Europe.

    Nordregio researcher awarded runner up of the Stockholmia Prize

    Mitchell Reardon, Research Assistant at Nordregio, was awarded runner up of the 2011 Stockholmia Prize by Samfundet St Erik, a community organization in Stockholm, and Stockholmsforskningen. The prize was awarded for the best Master's thesis focused on Stockholm in 2010.

    The second study visit in the Nordic-Russian Exchange Programme for Local Civil Servants, on the theme Urban Planning, took place in Odense February 9-11 2011. The focus of the visit was to present how Odense municipality has integrated the work on urban planning into their efforts to create a sustainable city.

    Klaus Georg Hansen has been employed as new deputy director of Nordregio with focus on HR management and senior research fellow. Klaus Georg Hansen is 49 years old and comes from a position as Head of Department for Spatial planning in the Government of Greenland.
